Why Do Dogs Chew at the Same Spot on Their Tail?
by Carla
(Winifrede, WV)
When dogs chew at the same spot on the tail, especially near the base where it meets the back, the most common reason is fleas. Many dogs are allergic to flea saliva, and just a few bites can make that area intensely itchy. When two dogs in the same home do it, fleas move even higher on the list.
Other possible causes include environmental or food allergies, full or irritated anal glands (which often cause scooting or licking under the tail), a hot spot or skin infection, and, less often, mange. Occasionally tail chewing is a behavior problem, but it's best to rule out medical causes first.
Comb through the fur near the tail for fleas or flea dirt, and make sure both dogs, and any other pets, are on a vet-recommended flea preventive year-round. If the chewing continues, the skin is red or broken, or hair is coming out, see your vet. Read more about itchy skin, mange and what else can cause it.
