Diarrhea is very common in dogs, and most sudden cases are mild and clear up on their own within a few days.1,2 But diarrhea can also be a sign of parvovirus, poisoning, a swallowed object, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis or another illness that needs a vet quickly.1,3,4 Our free Dog Diarrhea Checker asks 8 quick questions, starting with emergency warning signs, and tells you how soon to contact your vet, which causes are worth asking about, and gives you a printable summary for your appointment.
The checker is an educational tool, not a diagnosis. If your dog has diarrhea and is weak, won't eat, is vomiting, has black or bloody stool, a painful belly, or may have eaten something toxic, contact a vet now.1,3,5
Dog Diarrhea Checker
Dog Diarrhea Checker results from Dog Health Handbook · www.dog-health-handbook.com/dog-diarrhea-checker.html
This checker is an educational tool, not a diagnosis. Only a veterinarian who examines your dog can find the cause of diarrhea. If you're worried, call your vet.
How the Checker Works
The checker screens for emergencies first, then looks at your dog's age and vaccinations, how long the diarrhea has lasted, what the stool looks like, other signs and recent changes. Vets often sort diarrhea by where in the gut it seems to start, because that helps narrow down the cause.6,1
| If your answers show | The checker suggests | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Large amounts of bloody diarrhea, black stool, possible poison or swallowed object, weakness, pale gums or belly pain | Emergency: contact a vet now | Black stool can mean bleeding higher in the gut, and sudden bloody diarrhea can cause rapid dehydration.7,4,5 |
| A young puppy, a puppy that isn't fully vaccinated, vomiting too, tiredness or dehydration | Contact your vet today | Puppy diarrhea should be treated as a potential emergency, and any puppy with vomiting and diarrhea should be tested for parvo.8,9 |
| Diarrhea for more than 2 days or for weeks, blood or worms, greasy stools, weight loss, a new medicine, or a dog that seems off | Call your vet and book a visit soon | Call if diarrhea lasts more than about 2 days or doesn't improve with home care.1,3 |
| Soft stool for a day or two in a dog that is eating, drinking and acting normally | Likely a mild upset | Most sudden diarrhea is mild: in a large study, 84% of dogs had mild signs and most recovered within a week.2,10 |
What the Stool Can Tell You
| What you see | What it often means |
|---|---|
| Large amounts, normal or slightly more often, little straining | Small-intestine diarrhea; weight loss can occur6 |
| Small amounts, very often and urgently, straining, mucus, fresh red blood | Large-intestine diarrhea (colitis); weight loss is rare6 |
| Black, tarry stool | Bleeding higher up in the digestive tract; needs a vet7,1 |
| Watery, foul-smelling stool with mucus | Common with Giardia11 |

Safe Home Care for Mild Diarrhea
For an adult dog who seems well: keep fresh water available, feed small, frequent bland meals such as boiled chicken or low-fat hamburger with white rice, avoid treats and rich food, and switch back to the usual food gradually once stools firm up.1,3 Don't give human anti-diarrhea or stomach medicines unless your vet tells you to.1,10 Antibiotics aren't needed for most dogs with sudden diarrhea.2 See home remedies for dog diarrhea and diarrhea treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I worry about my dog's diarrhea?
Go now for large amounts of bloody diarrhea, black stool, a possible poison or swallowed object, weakness or belly pain. Call your vet the same day if your dog is also vomiting, won't eat, seems tired, or is a puppy. Call if diarrhea lasts more than about 2 days.
My dog has diarrhea but is acting fine. What should I do?
An occasional loose stool in a dog who is eating, drinking and acting normally is usually not a concern. Keep water available, feed small bland meals, and call your vet if it lasts more than 2 days or other signs appear.
Is diarrhea in puppies an emergency?
It can be. Puppies dehydrate quickly, and parvovirus and worms are common causes. Contact your vet today if a puppy has diarrhea, especially with vomiting or tiredness.
Does my dog need antibiotics for diarrhea?
Usually not. Current veterinary guidelines recommend against antibiotics for most mild and moderate sudden diarrhea, even with some blood. Vets use them for dogs that are severely ill.
What does mucus or red blood in my dog's diarrhea mean?
It usually points to the large intestine (colitis). It often settles, but call your vet if it lasts, there is a lot of blood, or your dog seems unwell.
Is the Dog Diarrhea Checker a diagnosis?
No. It helps you decide how soon to call your vet and what to ask. Only a vet who examines your dog can find the cause.
