What Causes Itchy Blisters That Leave Small Bald Circles on My Dog?
He is allergic to certain grasses but it isnt that. Hygeine good. Bathed 2-3 timezs/year. Wormed regular. Flea treatment regular. Up to date all injections.
What is it?
What you describe, small itchy bumps that form a blister or pustule, pop, crust over and leave a small round bald spot, is very typical of a superficial bacterial skin infection (pyoderma). The leftover circles are sometimes called collarettes. These infections usually develop because something else has weakened the skin's defenses, and allergies are the most common trigger, so his grass allergy may still be involved even if the timing doesn't seem to match.
Mange is less likely with this pattern, although demodectic mange can cause bumps and small bald patches, and ringworm can also leave round bald spots. Your vet can check with a skin scraping and simple tests.
Your good care with worming, flea control and vaccines helps, but recurring pyoderma usually needs a vet's help: treating the infection properly, often with a medicated shampoo or antibiotics, and managing the underlying allergy so it doesn't keep coming back.
