What Can I Do for a Rescued Stray With Scaly Bald Patches?

Reader Question
dog came up in yard started to call to call dog pound to pick her up because have 5 dogs we rescused already but I thought she had been abused. She was so scared.Just guessing she might be a yr.old at the most;mixed breed of some sort.So we decided to keep her too.She has patches of dry like scab areas;3 to 4 of them.On back of her neck,on hip & side of leg.I thought she had been run over & was now healing getting back her hair in these spots but went on internet and seen a picture of a dog that had mange and it looked like her.Looks kina like she has been shaved with a little hair coming thru it.Kinda scaling looking sorta like dandruff on an around it.My question is what kind of mange do u think she has,is this kind transferable to humans and the other dogs? Also if so what kind of home remedy can I do for her and the other dogs, also do I have it and what can I do for me? As I have no money for vet, drs.,or perscriptions. Please help us!!

Answer from Our Team

Thank you for taking her in. Several things could cause a few scaly, partly bald patches like these. They may be healing wounds, demodectic mange, ringworm or a skin infection. Demodectic mange isn't contagious, but ringworm can spread to other pets and people, and sarcoptic mange (scabies) spreads easily between dogs and causes temporary itchy bumps on people. That's why knowing the cause matters.

Until she's been checked, keep her separate from your other dogs, don't share bedding or brushes, and wash your hands after handling her. If you develop an itchy rash or round, scaly patches, see a doctor and mention the new dog.

We know money is tight, especially with six dogs. Look for a humane society, animal shelter or low-cost clinic nearby, which may offer help for rescued animals, or a veterinary school. You can also call a vet, explain your situation, and ask about lower-cost options. Please don't use motor oil, bleach or livestock ivermectin. Home remedies aren't proven to cure mange and some can harm dogs. Read more about mange symptoms and safe treatment.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
