Is Demodectic Mange the Same as Scabies?

No, they're two different conditions caused by different mites. Demodectic mange (demodicosis) is caused by Demodex mites, which live in small numbers in the hair follicles of almost every dog. Mange develops when they multiply out of control. In adult dogs, it's often linked to another illness or a medicine that weakens the immune system, so your vet may suggest tests to look for an underlying cause.
Scabies, or sarcoptic mange, is caused by Sarcoptes mites that burrow into the skin. It's intensely itchy and spreads easily between dogs.
Demodectic mange isn't contagious to people or to other dogs, so you don't need to worry about catching it. Scabies is different: its mites can cause a temporary itchy rash in people, though they can't survive or reproduce on human skin. Both types are very treatable today, usually with prescription medicines. Read more about demodectic mange in dogs.
