Answer from Our Team

The first step is a vet check, because allergies, ringworm and skin infections can look like mange, and then to find out which kind of mange it is, because the two main types are treated differently. Sarcoptic mange is very itchy, often starts on the ear edges, elbows and belly, and spreads to other dogs and, briefly, to people. Demodectic mange is often less itchy, causes patchy hair loss and isn't contagious. In adult dogs, demodex can be a sign of another health problem that your vet will want to check for.

Your vet will usually do a skin scraping. Many dogs are now treated with a modern oral anti-parasite medicine from the same family as flea and tick tablets, which clears most cases within weeks to a few months. Your vet may also treat a skin infection if there is one. If it's sarcoptic mange, every dog in the home needs treating.

Avoid home remedies such as motor oil, bleach or vinegar. They don't work reliably and can harm your dog.
