Can Mange Start on the Top of a Dog’s Paw?

Yes, it can. Demodectic mange sometimes affects the paws, causing hair loss, redness, swelling and sometimes infection between the toes. Paw involvement is more common in widespread demodectic mange, though in some dogs it shows up mainly on the feet. Sarcoptic mange can also affect the legs, though it usually starts on the ear edges, elbows and belly.
That said, the top of the paw is a very common spot for other problems. Dogs with environmental or food allergies often lick and chew their paws, causing redness, hair loss and staining. Yeast and bacterial infections, contact irritation, and ringworm are other possibilities.
Because these look alike, it's best to have your vet check the area. Hair plucks and skin scrapings can find Demodex mites on the paws, and your vet can also look for infection. Read more about what mange looks like and what else can cause hair loss.
