A small amount of mucus and fresh red blood in an otherwise bright, eating dog is often a sign of mild colitis, inflammation of the lower bowel. Common triggers include scavenging, a new food or treat, stress and parasites, and many cases settle within a few days.
Watch him closely. See your vet if it continues for more than a day or two, keeps coming back, or there's a lot of blood. Go the same day if he vomits, stops eating, seems lethargic or painful, or passes black, tarry stool, which can mean bleeding higher in the gut. Bring a stool sample to check for parasites.
