Reader Question
My mother's two year old Morkie has been have a constant yeast infection by his rear end since he has been neutered a year ago .

His has been continually been being subjected to anal expressions and they seem to come more and more rapidly.

The vet's discussed in my presence that this dog may need surgery . Then did an about face and suggested he see an outside Vet dermatologist .

Answer from Our Team

A young dog with recurring yeast around the rear and frequent anal gland problems often has an underlying allergy, which is a common link between the two. That's exactly what a veterinary dermatologist specializes in.

A dermatologist can run allergy work-ups, including a strict food trial, check whether the anal sacs are infected and treat them by flushing and medicating, and help decide whether surgery is really needed. Referral is a good step, not a sign your vet has given up.
