Reader Question
i have a 3 year old collie crooss jack russell. he has normal bowel movement but in between times he seems to be leaking faeces slightly n its marking my carpets and furniture. i have only had him for 3 months. he has a weight problem and is on a special diet. i have only noticed this leakage in the last couple of weeks. why is this happening?

Answer from Our Team

Leaking stool between normal bowel movements in a young dog is worth a vet visit. Common causes are anal gland problems, which can irritate the area, soft stool caused by a new or special diet, inflammation of the colon, or, less often, a problem with the nerves or muscles that control the anus.

Ask your vet to check his anal glands, examine his rectum and do a stool test for parasites. Mention the diet change, since a weight-loss diet high in fibre can make stool bulkier and harder to hold. Also tell your vet if he scoots, licks his bottom, or has any weakness in his back legs or tail.
