Reader Question
2 yo female mini 8 lbs dachshund we are the 4th family in her first year. She urinates when she gets excited upon our coming back into the house. we are the first to crate her. she is okay with her crate. we have two older male doxies, all are neutered. older is the alpha and has been helpful in training the younger two. all seem to be healthy good weights, with waistlines. we feed them grain free kibble with a small serving of green beans twice a day. she has literally emptied her bladder in front of us after being scolded, on 3 occasions recently. she smells of urine and doesn't seem to mind. we keep her bathed hoping it will help. also keep her crate clean. we have asked our vet about it and they pretty much passed it off as behavioral.
Answer from Our Team
Leaking urine when excited or when scolded is usually excitement or submissive urination, which is common in young dogs, especially those with unsettled histories. It isn't true incontinence and often improves with age and confidence.
Keep greetings calm and low-key, greet her outside at first, avoid scolding, and reward her for going outside. Since she also smells of urine, ask your vet to rule out a urinary infection or leaking at rest.
See urinary incontinence in dogs for how incontinence differs from behavior problems.
