Young Cockapoo Leaking Formed Stools at Night

Reader Question
I have read several articles on dog incontinence where the theme of having loose feces is discussed. My 31/2y/o cockapoo does not have loose feces or diarrhea. His feces are large and well formed. When he does go the first feces is very firm and the second is much less firm. Lack of fiber does not appear to be the problem.

The issue for the past 6 mos. is nocturnal leakage. We awake occasionally in the morning to find both 1-2 small well formed feces or more rarely what appears to be loose leakage.

There has not been any change in his diet that I can attribute to this change. He does rarely exhibit scooting after relieving himself. We have noticed that he develops a dogginess smell sooner than expected after grooming.

Answer from Our Team

Formed stools leaking while he sleeps usually mean the anal sphincter isn't closing fully when he's relaxed. In a young dog, common causes include anal gland problems (the scooting and a doggy smell soon after grooming are clues), inflammation around the anus, or, less often, a problem with the nerves in the lower back or tail.

Ask your vet to check and empty his anal glands, examine the area and his rectum, and check his back, tail and back legs for pain or weakness. Taking him out for a last bowel movement right before bed often helps reduce night-time accidents.
