Why a Dog Pees Indoors Soon After Coming Inside

Why does my dog urinate in the house soon after coming in from outside

Answer from Our Team

This is a common frustration, and there are both behavioural and medical reasons for it. Many dogs get distracted outdoors and don’t fully empty their bladder, especially on short or busy outings. Some never fully learned to go outside, and others mark indoors, which is more common in unneutered males.

Medical causes are worth ruling out, especially if this is new. A bladder infection can make a dog feel the urge to go again soon after peeing. Bladder stones, incontinence, or conditions that cause increased thirst, such as diabetes or kidney disease, can also lead to accidents. Signs that suggest a medical problem include straining, frequent small amounts, blood in the urine, a strong smell or drinking more than usual.

A vet check with a urine test is a good start. If that is normal, try longer, calmer outings, wait until your dog has fully finished, and reward going outside straight away. Clean accidents with an enzyme cleaner so the smell doesn’t draw your dog back.
