Which Vaccines Does a Hunting Retriever Puppy Need?
by Pam
A retriever that will work in water and fields should get all the core vaccines: DHPP (distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza and parvovirus) and rabies. Make sure the puppy series continues until at least 16 weeks of age, followed by a booster.
Leptospirosis is a good choice. The bacteria spread through wildlife urine in water and soil, and AAHA now considers the vaccine core for all dogs. It's given as two doses starting from 12 weeks, then yearly. Lyme vaccine makes sense if you hunt in tick areas, along with good tick prevention.
Also ask your vet about Bordetella (kennel cough) and canine influenza if she'll be training with other dogs, staying in kennels or attending field trials. Your vet can tailor the plan to where you hunt.
