Which Cough Medicine Is Best for Kennel Cough?
Most dogs with mild kennel cough don't need any medication. The cough usually eases with rest within 7 to 10 days, and walking on a harness instead of a collar helps.
When a dry cough is persistent and keeping a dog (or family) awake, vets may prescribe a cough suppressant such as hydrocodone or butorphanol. Cough suppressants should not be used if pneumonia is possible. Antibiotics aren't needed for most mild cases, but vets often prescribe doxycycline when a dog has thick nasal discharge along with fever, lethargy or a poor appetite.
Don't give human cough or cold products without your vet's approval. Some contain xylitol, which can cause a dangerous drop in a dog's blood sugar, and some multi-symptom products contain painkillers or decongestants that are unsafe for dogs.
