Where Do Hormones Come From After a Dog Is Spayed?

by Bryson

Reader Question
what produces hormones in a spayed female dog? In other words, how does the female dogs produce hormones once the have their girl parts removed?

Answer from Our Team

The ovaries are a female dog's main source of estrogen and progesterone, so once they're removed, she stops coming into heat and those hormone levels fall a lot. Her adrenal glands, two small glands near the kidneys, still make small amounts of sex hormones, so the hormones don't disappear completely.

This drop in estrogen is one reason some spayed females leak urine as they get older, because estrogen helps keep the bladder outlet closed. It's usually treatable, so mention it to your vet if it happens.

If a spayed dog shows heat signs, such as a swollen vulva, bleeding or attracting males, a small piece of ovary may have been left behind, and your vet can check for it.
