What Happens if a Torn Tendon or Ligament in a Dog Is Never Treated?
It depends on which structure is torn. In the knee, the most common tear is the cranial cruciate ligament (the dog's ACL). Left untreated, the knee stays unstable, which usually leads to ongoing lameness, damage to the cartilage cushion (meniscus) and arthritis. Some small dogs stabilize with scar tissue, but larger dogs usually stay lame.
Tendon tears elsewhere, such as the Achilles tendon, can lead to a permanently dropped hock if not repaired. Have your vet identify exactly what is torn so you can weigh the options.
