Vet Suggests Surgery for a Labradoodle Whose Kneecap Slips

Reader Question
Monty, 4 1/2 year old labradoodle. he has had a problem in the past with his knee, x rays showed a dislocation, he was given anti inflammatory drugs an has been having hydro therapy for a while. He runs fine and goes for a walk every day, rushes up the stairs and enjoys playing.

His owner is getting distraught as her new vets have suggested an operation on his knee to scrape away some of the bone to reset his patella. To me this seems extreme. I would appreciate your views

Answer from Our Team

The operation your vet describes, deepening the groove the kneecap sits in, is a standard treatment for a slipping kneecap and over 90% of owners are satisfied afterward. Surgery is usually recommended for grade 2 and above, especially if the dog is lame or the condition is getting worse.

If he's running and playing normally, it's reasonable to ask your vet what grade he has, why they recommend surgery now, and what happens if you wait. A second opinion from a veterinary surgeon can help you decide.
