Vet Recommends a Plate for a Boxer's Intermittent Limp

Reader Question
my 3yr old boxer had an xray today as he intermintantly limps,

doesn't cry, I have pulled the leg about and he doesn't flinch.

he runs about jumps fine and only limps when he has sat down for a while.

the vet has said they have to break his leg and put a plate in it.!!!

this sounds a little extreme to me, would you be able to elaborate

further or give me some advise.

thank you

Answer from Our Team

It sounds as if your vet is recommending TPLO, a common surgery for a torn or partly torn cruciate ligament. It sounds dramatic, but the cut in the shin bone is planned and held with a plate, and it's the surgery with the strongest evidence for active, medium and large dogs. Limping after rest and a dog that doesn't react to handling are both common with a partial tear.

Ask your vet to explain what they found on the exam and X-rays, and what the options are, including lateral suture surgery. A second opinion from a veterinary surgeon is reasonable before any major operation.

See torn ACL in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
