Very Small Bowel Movements in a Senior Dog on Arthritis Medicine
Small bowel movements can simply reflect eating less, but in a 15-year-old dog it's worth checking for constipation or straining. Arthritis pain can make it hard to squat, so some dogs go less completely. Many arthritis medicines can affect the gut, so tell your vet about the change.
Call your vet if he strains without passing much, his stools are hard and dry, he's eating less, vomiting or seems uncomfortable, or you see black stools. Black stool can mean stomach bleeding, a possible side effect of some arthritis medicines. Make sure he drinks well, and ask your vet before adding fibre or stool softeners. Older dogs on arthritis medicine should have regular blood tests.
