Reader Question
OK.......Dog#1..Trouble. About 6 mo.ago,Her left eye..The bottom lid was dropped and very red..to an extreme, on both accounts. The was an opaque grey on the bottom, Her pupil was all over the place, upward mostly. I had been putting Refresh Optive.it comes in individual doses..sterile. It seemed to be helping alittle, some days not so much. We finnally were able to take her to the Vet, on one of her good days,of course...well,he subscribed an allergy gtts, which did less than the Refresh. Now, Dog#2..Sadie Sue, has the same thing. I hope you can help.We are having a very difficult time finnancially. I can send you pictures..please help us. I would have to have my better half do that, as I'm not computer savy:)Thanks

Answer from Our Team

When two dogs in the same home develop similar eye problems, the vet will want to consider shared causes such as an irritant, an allergy or an infection. A droopy, very red lower lid with a gray area and an abnormal-looking pupil could also mean inflammation inside the eye or another problem, so both dogs need a proper eye exam.

Artificial tears are safe for keeping the eyes moist, but they won't treat the cause. Please ask your vet for a stain test and an eye pressure check. If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a low-cost clinic, humane society clinic or veterinary school near you.

Our page on dog eye infections lists signs that need urgent care.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
