Toy Poodle With Many Cysts on the Eyelids

Reader Question
I have a toy poodle (1year) with a eyelid problem.

Had him at the local vet and eye specialist with no result for helping him. They precribed an anti biotic and gave cortisome injection. This is goiing on for 5 weeks and the condition does'nt seem to get better. One docter sugested an operation to remove the sists. They counted 29 of the sists on his eyelids. I'm sure he must have a lot of pain and discomfort.

Answer from Our Team

Multiple bumps along the eyelid margins are often from the small oil glands in the eyelids (meibomian glands), which can become blocked, infected or inflamed. Inflamed oil-gland lumps (chalazia) are usually lanced and scraped out from the inside of the lid. Skin scrapings for mites and a biopsy can show whether immune-related inflammation is involved, which may need medicine rather than surgery alone.

Ask the ophthalmologist how the bumps would be treated and whether a sample could confirm what they are.

See dog eye infections for more on eyelid problems.
