Toe Cancer in a Giant Schnauzer: Licking Was the First Sign
Prompt amputation gave her several good years and I would recommend that procedure for others.
Thank you for sharing this. Squamous cell carcinoma of the toe is one of the most common toe tumors in dogs, and large, dark-coated breeds such as Giant Schnauzers, Standard Poodles and Rottweilers are overrepresented. A swollen toe, a nail that keeps breaking or constant licking at one toe can be early signs.
As your experience shows, prompt X-rays and a biopsy, followed by removal of the toe, can give a good long-term outcome when the tumor hasn't spread, though it's wise to keep checking the other toes, as these breeds can develop it in more than one. Most dogs walk very well after a single toe amputation.
