Reader Question
A tumor of the thyroid has just been found in our nine year old beagle. she is showing signs of hyperthyroidism like increased hunger, thirst and urination. She was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a couple of years ago. Noe that she has this tumor , shoul she still take the thyroid hormone twice a day?

Answer from Our Team

Don't change her medication without your vet. Some thyroid tumors produce hormone, and if her thyroid levels are now high, your vet may lower or stop her dose.

Ask for a thyroid blood test and a referral to discuss the tumor; options can include surgery, radiation or radioactive iodine depending on the tumor.

See thyroid cancer in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
