Third Eyelids Showing in 5-Week-Old Akita Puppies
In young puppies, a prominent third eyelid can simply reflect how the eyes sit in the head, and it often looks less noticeable as the face grows. But a third eyelid that stays raised can also be a sign of small eyes (microphthalmia), eye pain or illness, and Akitas can have inherited eye problems.
Have the litter examined by your vet, and ask about an eye exam by a veterinary ophthalmologist before the puppies go to new homes. They can measure the eyes and tell you whether this is normal or something that needs treatment.
For third-eyelid gland problems, see cherry eye in dogs.
