Third Eyelid Torn From Its Base

We're sorry this happened. Before agreeing to remove the eye, it's worth getting a second opinion from a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist. Some third-eyelid injuries can be repaired, and losing the third eyelid or its gland doesn't always mean the eye must be removed.
Dogs that lose the third-eyelid gland are at higher risk of dry eye, which is usually managed with tear-stimulating drops and lubricants, but the main tear gland above the eye still makes tears. An eye is usually removed only if it's badly damaged, blind and painful, or can't be kept comfortable. Ask your vet to check tear production and explain why removal is advised.
See cherry eye in dogs for more on the third-eyelid gland.
