Thin Doberman With Hair Loss: Is It Hypothyroidism?

Reader Question
I have a chocolate female doberman who is around 5-6 yrs old,she has little or no hair on her ears and she chews at her back alot so the hair is darker there but she is very active and I cant get her to gain weight, she is to thin in my opinion. Now I noticed that she is losing hair between her eyes and it looks scaly...Do you think that she has Hypothyroidism ? I have heard that dobermans are known to have this type of problem and I have heard that the chocolate color dogs are worse for it. Is this true ? I also must tell you that I took her to a vet last year and he said it was flea allergies and loaded me up with frontline. please get back to me with your opinion

Answer from Our Team

Dobermans do have a high risk of hypothyroidism. But hypothyroid dogs usually gain weight and are less active, so a thin, very active dog with chewing and scaly hair loss is more likely to have allergies, mites or a skin infection. Blue and fawn Dobermans can lose hair from a condition called color dilution alopecia, but red (chocolate) Dobermans aren't affected, so it's unlikely in her. There's no good evidence that red Dobermans are more prone to hypothyroidism than black ones.

Ask your vet for skin scrapings, a skin cytology and, if needed, a thyroid panel (not just T4). Flea allergy is still possible even with flea control.

See hypothyroidism in dogs.
