Terrier's Foot Still Swollen After Three Weeks Despite Normal X-Rays

Reader Question
I am looking after my daughters 10 y.o. Fox terrier (pure bred). He hurt his foot about 3weeks ago. He was limping and the foot was swollen. The vet put him on anti- inflammatory medication and called again a few days later (home call vet). Advised x-ray this was done at a local clinic; they found no breaks, and said to continue medication and to confine him.

my daughter is still away and we finish the anti- inflammatory today he is still holding the foot up and it is still swollen. Should I call vet and get more meds? Would appreciate your advice..

Answer from Our Team

Yes, please call the vet. A foot that is still swollen and held up after three weeks of anti-inflammatory treatment and rest needs a recheck, even if the first X-rays showed no breaks. Some fractures and ligament injuries in the toes and foot don't show clearly on the first X-ray, and infection, a foreign body or an injury to the toe joints can also cause lasting swelling.

Your vet may repeat or extend the X-rays, check for infection or something embedded, and decide whether more medication, a splint or referral is needed. Don't restart or extend any anti-inflammatory without the vet's advice, and keep him confined until he's been seen.
