Swollen Leg and Fever Three Days After Cruciate Surgery
by Ellen
(Bakersfield california)
Swelling and fever soon after surgery can come from infection, especially in a dog that recently had a staph infection, or from a seroma, inflammation or an implant reaction. The team will usually take samples from the incision or joint for culture, so the right antibiotic can be chosen.
Most post-operative infections can be treated successfully, though some need longer treatment or, occasionally, implant removal once the bone has healed. Ask the hospital to explain what tests they're running, whether the culture checks for antibiotic-resistant staph, and what the plan is.
If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a veterinary school or low-cost clinic near you.
