Swollen Cheek, Puffy Eyes and Red Marks on a Shih Tzu

Reader Question
I have a male shih tzu whose right cheek started to swell and his eyes seem puffy. He still plays like normal and hardly shows any sign of breathing disorders except when starts to sound like snoring which we'll eventually counter by making him drink water. We also noticed some slightly obvious red marks around his lower body. Could this be a sign of allergy? I'm really really worried...please...I need veterinary help right now.

Answer from Our Team

Facial swelling with puffy eyes and red marks is often an allergic reaction, for example to an insect sting. Swelling of one cheek can also be a tooth root abscess or a bite. Snoring sounds can mean the swelling is affecting his airway.

Please see a vet right away. Swelling can worsen quickly, and noisy breathing makes this urgent.
