Swelling on One Side of a Chihuahua's Face That Drains Pus

by Jom

Reader Question
My 8 year old dog who is a chiuauau has had his face swollen all the way up to his nose only on one side of his face. It has gotten smaller over a week and now looks like a small ball about the width of the tip of the ring finger. He has been loosing hair on that spot and puss has been coming out as well as a red spot in the middle. What is it and how could I treat it?

Answer from Our Team

A swelling on one side of the face that drains pus is often an abscess, and in small dogs a common cause is an infected tooth root in the upper jaw. Bite wounds and foreign bodies are other possibilities.

Please see a vet. Antibiotics alone often don't cure a tooth root abscess, so your vet may recommend dental X-rays and treating or removing the tooth.

See dog eye infections for eye-area swelling.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
