Swelling on Both Sides of a Dog's Penis

Reader Question
Our dog (pug & jack russell mix) who is 6 yrs old, has developed a swelling on either side of his penis. It was like there were 2 sacs on either side and droopy. He just finished one round of antibiotics where the sacs appeared to decrease in size. But now, a week later the sacs have grown and feel a lot firmer. What could this possibly be and how can it be treated.

Appreciate your advise please and thanx

Answer from Our Team

Two bumps at the base of the penis that appear when a dog is excited are usually the bulbus glandis, a normal part of the penis that fills with blood and goes down within minutes to an hour. Swellings that last for days, like the ones you describe, are something else.

Swellings that stay, feel firmer, or keep coming back after antibiotics aren't normal and need a recheck. Possible causes include inflammation or infection of the sheath, swelling of the scrotum or nearby lymph nodes, a hernia, and, less often, a growth. Your vet will examine the area and may suggest an ultrasound or a needle sample.

See your vet promptly, and go sooner if the swelling is painful, he licks it a lot, there's discharge or blood, his penis won't go back into the sheath, or he has trouble urinating.

See dog penis problems.
