Supplements During Chemotherapy for Lymphoma

by Sue

Reader Question
My 15 year old Westie has been recently diagnosed with the above and has started chemo. She has a history of pancreates, bleeding ulcers and sludge around the liver, all which occured two years ago. I'm trying to find something that will give her an immune system strength as well as supplements that will help give us more time with her and maybe help rid the mass in her spleen. My vet says that by giving her immune system aid it might feed the cancer.

Please advise. Thank-you

Answer from Our Team

Your vet's caution is sensible. Some supplements, especially antioxidants and "immune boosters", may interfere with chemotherapy or affect the liver, and there's little evidence that they shrink tumors. Please check every supplement with her oncologist before using it.

The best ways to support her are to keep her eating, manage nausea and comfort with medicines from her vet, and keep her stomach protected given her history of ulcers. If you're interested in supplements, ask her oncologist which, if any, are safe given her history of pancreatitis and ulcers.

See lymphoma in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
