Sudden Squinting in Both Eyes After Being Outside

Reader Question
Smokie is a 5 year old shepard mix. I let Smokie outside for about 15 minutes for an afternoon toilet run, she's on 50ft chain so didn't go out of the yard this afternoon. She came in and ate her dinner. I didn't notice anything different for about 3 hours and then looked into her eyes as she was waking up and she couldn't open either of them all the way and is squinting in bright light.

I flooded her eyes with warm sea-salt water 2 times about an hour apart. It's late so I'm hoping that her eyes will look better in the morning. I can barely keep her in heartworm meds so cannot take her to the vet... just NO money. Does anyone have any ideas? Please

Answer from Our Team

Sudden squinting in both eyes after being outdoors can come from an irritant, pollen, dust, an insect sting or something blown into the eyes. Rinsing with saline was sensible, and plain sterile saline is the gentlest choice.

If she's still squinting the next day, the eyes look cloudy, or there's thick discharge, she needs to be seen, because squinting means pain and a scratch on the eye can worsen quickly. If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a low-cost clinic, humane society clinic or veterinary school near you.
