Reader Question
i have a four yr old german sheperd, he has been sick five times earlier today, first couple times was last nites dinner vomited this morning but looking completely undigested.he then vomited up his breakfast but has kept down tonights dinner. i have just found a large lump at top of his back between his shoulder blades that was not there earlier today.it is about size of half a golf ball.

i have been concerned over past couple of weeks as one eye seems very slightly bulgy but have not been to sure if it is.also think his tongue has not been looking as pink as it should do. he is due to be wormed.I will be taking him to vets first thing but am very worried now and wondered if u had any ideas?

Answer from Our Team

A lump that appears within hours is often a swelling from an injection, bite, sting or allergic reaction rather than a tumor. It can also be bleeding under the skin. Together with pale gums, that can point to a clotting problem, such as rat poison or lungworm, which is common in parts of the UK including London, so tell your vet about any possible poison exposure and his worming history. Combined with vomiting, a possibly bulging eye and a pale tongue, your vet visit was the right step.

Pale gums can mean anemia or poor circulation and need a vet the same day.
