Sudden Increase in Urination After an Injection

Reader Question
My 6 year old labradoodle had several infections over a course of his life.

we have been on Royal Cain so for several years. he has recently been urinating more asking to go out in the middle of the night. He really has to go and it is clear. no other symptoms. This started directly after a shoulder injury, that resulted in one time only pain shot and yearly imunizations. Help should I have a urine sample to vet?

Answer from Our Team

Yes, taking a fresh urine sample to your vet is a sensible first step. Drinking and urinating more than usual, with clear, dilute urine and night-time trips outside, is not typical of a simple bladder infection. It is more often a sign that he is drinking more.

The timing is a useful clue. If the pain injection for his shoulder was a steroid, increased thirst and urination are common side effects and usually settle within days to a few weeks. Ask your vet what was given. Routine vaccinations are not a usual cause.

If it continues, your vet will want to rule out conditions such as diabetes, Cushing’s disease and kidney disease, which all cause increased thirst and urination. A urinalysis with urine concentration and a culture, plus blood tests if needed, will help sort this out, particularly given his history of infections. In the meantime, don’t restrict his water, and keep a rough note of how much he drinks.

See urinary tract infection symptoms in dogs for the signs that do and don’t point to infection.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
