Strengthening a Lab After Torn ACL Surgery

Reader Question
Our 10 yr old yellow lab, Molly is recovering from a torn ACL in June. We decided to opt on surgery and give it 8 - 10 months to heal. What is the best way to start conditioning and strengthen her core?

Thank you in advance for your prompt response!

Answer from Our Team

After the initial rest period, conditioning should build slowly and be guided by your surgeon or a rehabilitation therapist. Typical steps include gradually lengthening leash walks, slow walking up gentle hills, sit-to-stand exercises, and later walking over low poles. Underwater treadmill work is very helpful if it's available.

Avoid off-leash running, jumping and ball chasing until your surgeon clears her, and keep her lean, which reduces strain on both knees.
