Reader Question
When I cup my hand around my dogs knee and bend it with the other hand I can feels like something snapping it's like snap, snap, snap as I bend.Had xray done nothing unusual. No drawer sliding of the knee.He is lame. What could it be? Sorry I can't explain it well you have to feel it. It seems it would make a popping sound when I do it but it doesn't. Darlene

Answer from Our Team

A snapping or clicking felt when bending the knee can come from a torn meniscus, a kneecap slipping in and out of its groove, or a tendon moving over bone. A partial cruciate tear can also be missed on the drawer test, especially if the dog is tense, and the ligament itself doesn't show on X-rays.

Ask your vet about re-examining the knee under sedation, or a referral to a surgeon for arthroscopy, which lets them look at the ligament and meniscus directly.

See dog knee problems and torn ACL in dogs.
