Smelly Brown Patches on a Dog's Belly After Swimming

Reader Question
my dog (shep/dobi cross?) has developed a stomach rash. Primarily on the underbelly where there is little hair but noticed it starting to spread under the "pits" of her front legs. It appears to be slightly raised dark (brown) patches no puss- but she smells terrible (like rotting flesh). It doesn't appear to be itchy as she doesn't seem bothered by it.

She loves swimming in the lake so am wondering if she picked something up from there.

I have been washing it daily and treating with GOLD BOND powder which seems to be helping clear up existing rashes- now her skin is peeling where the scabs are coming off. The gold bond seems to be clearing up existing but not preventing new flareups.

any suggestions what it may be and best way to treat?

Answer from Our Team

A foul smell with raised, dark patches on the belly and armpits suggests a bacterial or yeast skin infection, which lake swimming and damp skin can encourage.

Your vet can confirm it with a quick tape or swab test and prescribe a medicated shampoo. Dry her thoroughly after swimming, and avoid powders on broken skin.
