Small Soft Pink Mass Near a Dog's Prepuce

Reader Question
My 13-year-old Yorkshire terrier has a small soft pink mass near the opening where he urinates from. Are these usually benign? Gus is under a vet's care and she is going to do a biopsy (surgeon will do it), under a general anaesthetic, since it is located in a sensitive area for the dog. We are having it done the first week of July. I am interested to know how common this problem is in dogs.

Thanks.

Answer from Our Team

Small pink masses on or near the prepuce are often benign, such as papillomas, but other tumors can occur there too. A biopsy is the right approach, and doing it under anesthesia in a sensitive area is sensible.

Ask the surgeon to remove the whole mass if possible and send it to a pathologist, which often both diagnoses and treats it.

See lumps and bumps on dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
