Small Dog Suddenly Needs to Poop in the Middle of the Night
by Donna
(Napa Ca)
A change in when a dog needs to go can have simple causes, such as eating at a different time, a bigger or later meal, or less exercise in the evening. It can also be an early sign of a gut problem, such as colitis, which causes urgency, or of a change with age.
Some things that often help: feed dinner a little earlier, avoid treats late in the evening, and take her out for a longer walk and a last chance to go right before bed. Note what her poop looks like. If it's soft, has mucus, she's going more often overall, or she's straining, losing weight or drinking more, ask her vet to check her and test a stool sample.
See our dog poop chart for what normal poop and frequency look like.
