Small Dog Passing Half-Green Stool

Reader Question
...........half was normal the other half was green.........like bile......subsequent BM wasn't as bad......no bad odor. What causes this?..why

Answer from Our Team

A single stool that's partly green is usually caused by something your dog ate, such as grass, green treats or chews. Food that moves quickly through the gut can also look greener, because bile, which is green-yellow, doesn't have time to break down to brown. Since the next stool was better and there's no bad smell, this is usually not a worry.

Watch for a few days. Call your vet if green stools continue, or if your dog has diarrhea, vomiting, low energy, or could have eaten something toxic such as rodent bait.

See our dog poop chart.
