Small Dog Can’t Make It Outside to Poop: Is It Incontinence or House Training?

Reader Question
Our little rescued Maltese cross can't quite make it out the door for BM's. Even when I carry her out in my arms a poo will drop out. House breaking has been next to impossible. I take her out after naps and eating and she still has accidents in the house. Have not seen this addressed anywhere. Thank you

Answer from Our Team

Many small dogs, especially rescues, were never fully house-trained, and their small bowel and quick metabolism leave less time between feeling the urge and going. Being picked up can also press on the belly and trigger a bowel movement. So this may be a training and timing problem rather than true incontinence, but it’s worth a vet check to be sure.

Your vet can look for things that cause urgency, such as parasites, colitis or a sensitive stomach, and check the anal sphincter and back-end nerves. Tell them whether the stool is normal, whether she seems aware she’s going, and whether she ever drops stool while resting. Dropping stool without noticing points more to sphincter weakness.

At home, take her out right after waking, playing and eating, and try to get her outside before she starts to circle or sniff. A leash and a set spot can help, and so can praise and a small treat the moment she goes outside. Feeding at set times makes her bowel movements more predictable. See our guide to bowel incontinence in dogs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
