Reader Question
The vet just keeps cleaning the infected area. It's not getting any better. 5 months treatment, My dog is lethargic, doesn't move from one spot all day. I have to push his food under his chin for him to eat. He has a similar growth on his right back foot.

Answer from Our Team

A sore or growth that hasn't healed after months of cleaning, along with a similar growth on another foot and a dog who is lethargic and barely eating, needs a different approach. Please ask your vet for a biopsy of the growth, or ask for a referral.

Some skin cancers, including squamous cell carcinoma and some nail-bed tumors, can look like infected sores. A dog who won't get up or eat may also be in pain or have other illness, so please have him seen soon.
