Shih Tzu With Heart Failure Who Can't Take Lasix
Removing fluid with a needle helps for a short time but doesn't stop it coming back while the heart is failing, so medication is still the main treatment. If Lasix made him stop eating, ask your vet about a lower dose, a different diuretic such as torsemide, or adding pimobendan or other medicines; appetite can sometimes be improved too.
If fluid keeps building up despite medication, or he can't breathe comfortably, it may be time to talk about quality of life. That's a hard decision, and your vet can help you weigh it.
If cost is a worry, ask your vet about a payment plan, or look for a low-cost clinic, humane society clinic or veterinary school near you.
