Sheltie Limping After Jumping Out of a Car

Reader Question
Hello,

my dog, 7 yrs old male jumped from the family SUV and i believe landed wrong on his left foot.

I ACE bandaged it today, not tightly and it is sore just below his foot joint.

It appears to to be sensitive while he limps but does not whine or yelp.

I currently have a splint made from toungue surpressors and tape to help him in immoblizing it.

And I have used cold compresses with an ice pack. 15 minutes on and 15 off.

He is getting rest and not much activity or play other than going outside to relieve himself.

Any thing further I can do to comfort him?

He has no bone desease and has never been on any medications.

He is a Shetland Sheepdog and weighs approx. 35#

Thank you ever so much in advising me.

Answer from Our Team

Rest, cold compresses and limiting activity are sensible first steps for a mild sprain. We'd suggest taking off the homemade splint, though. Even a carefully made splint can rub, cut off circulation or let the injury heal badly, so splinting is best left to a vet. If you use a light wrap, make sure it's loose and check the toes for swelling.

Keep him on short leash walks only. If he isn't clearly improving within a couple of days, can't bear weight, or the area is very swollen, have him examined, as X-rays are usually needed to rule out a fracture in the foot, wrist or ankle (hock). Only use pain medicine your vet prescribes.

See dog paw injuries and dog sprains and strains.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
