Severe Watery Diarrhea and Accidents After a Puppy's Spay

Reader Question
My dog was recently spayed. She is only 5 months old. Her stool never returned to normal consistency, and since then it's gotten more loose, until a couple days ago. She started waking us in the middle of the night to go out, having diarrhea. Then today while in her crate she lost control and went all over herself and the crate. After bathing her, again she lost control in the kitchen. She whimpers while she's trying to go, and it's very very loose and watery. I am not sure what could be the cause? I'm calling the vet in the morning, but I'm worried that it could be a complication of her surgery.

Answer from Our Team

You're right to call the vet. A 5-month-old puppy with worsening watery diarrhea, accidents she can't control and pain when she goes needs to be seen promptly, ideally today. Spay surgery itself doesn't usually cause diarrhea, but stress, medicines given around surgery, and exposure to parasites or infections around that time can trigger it.

Common causes at her age include parasites such as Giardia, coccidia and whipworms, colitis from stress or a diet change, and infections such as parvovirus if her vaccinations aren't complete. Take a fresh stool sample with you. Go to an emergency vet now if she vomits, won't drink, seems weak or lethargic, has a lot of blood in her stool, or her gums look pale or tacky. Also mention any swelling, redness or discharge at her incision.

See dog diarrhea.
