Reader Question
Our mix lab, 13-14 yrs old is eating stool, passing gas terribly and has very large stool deposits, he is drinking too much water ( 10 L bowl is empty within 2 days) he is restless and quickly out of breath. I know he is nearing the end but don't want him to be uncomfortable. Any suggestions? He has dry kibbles and is eating ok. Try to keep him away from feces but he is often outside alone, got lots of space so don't know if he has movements every day or saving it up for a huge movement. Thsnks

Answer from Our Team

Drinking much more than usual, large stools, eating stool, restlessness and getting out of breath easily in an older dog can be signs of conditions such as Cushing's disease, diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease, several of which are treatable.

Please take him for a checkup with blood and urine tests. If he has to be at the end of his life, your vet can help keep him comfortable, but it's worth finding out first whether something treatable is going on. Noisy breathing, pale or blue gums or collapse need urgent care.

See dog panting for causes of panting.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Please follow your own vet's advice.
