Senior Golden Retriever Wearing Her Claws Down by Dragging Her Paws

Reader Question
Our Golden Retriever just turned 14. She has spondylitis in her spine which affects her front legs. She also has arthritis in her back right leg as a result of a TPLO 6 years ago. She is dragging her front left paw along the pavement when walking which has resulted in one of her claws being worn down to the quick and it is obviously very sensitive to the touch. How can I protect this claw from further injury? Every so often her back legs will go out from under her as the muscles are weakened. She is on Tramadol and Carprofen for pain and inflammation.

Answer from Our Team

Paw dragging, or scuffing, usually means a dog isn't fully aware of where her feet are or can't lift them properly. In an older dog with spinal disease, this is often caused by the spine affecting the nerves, not by arthritis alone, so let your vet know it's getting worse.

To protect her claws, ask your vet to treat the sore toe, and try protective boots made for dogs who drag their feet, or rubber toe grips and nail caps. Walk on grass or softer surfaces where possible, and keep walks short. A veterinary rehabilitation therapist can suggest exercises to improve strength and foot placement, and a support harness can help on bad days. Non-slip rugs at home will help when her back legs give way.
