Senior Dog Won't Bend a Back Leg When Lying Down

Reader Question
My dog will be 14 yrs old next month. He recently started favoring his hind leg. When he lays down, he doesn't bend that leg, it lays straight paw facing forward. The funny thing is, when he is outside walking slow, he tends to drag that leg, but when we pick up the pace, he has no problem when he "trots".ii don't know if its arthritis or a fracture or a tendon?

Answer from Our Team

Holding a back leg straight and dragging it at a walk can come from a stiff, arthritic knee or hip, an old cruciate tear, a tendon injury, or nerve or spine problems. Dragging the toes is particularly worth checking, since it can mean the dog isn't aware of where the foot is, which points to a nerve problem rather than a joint.

Ask your vet to examine the knee and hip and check his reflexes. X-rays will usually show arthritis or a fracture. Look at the top of his toenails; worn nails suggest he's been scuffing that foot.
